This East Tennessee homestead project focuses on creating a sustainable and self-sufficient off-grid lifestyle within the Appalachian landscape. The design includes silvopasture systems for dairy cows, goats, and meat animals, along with dedicated milking parlors. A climate battery greenhouse supports year-round growing, while on-contour food forests and swales provide natural water storage and diverse food production. Keyline ponds aid in irrigating silvopasture areas, promoting water conservation.
The homestead features eco-friendly infrastructure, including solar water catchment, greywater systems, and composting toilets. The design also incorporates spaces for relaxation and personal retreats, blending ecological resilience with the family's desire for a harmonious and regenerative living environment. A particular design challenge we faced was the heavily wooded and hilly terrain, which has to be carefully managed to account for the possibility of erosion.
